English Bridge Union gets dealt a “poor” VAT hand by European Union – Not a Sport they say.

27.10.2017

In the news today is the decision of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that they do not consider the game of duplicate bridge to fall within the VAT Exemption for a Sporting activity. The English Bridge Union had put forward their argument that it was a sport for VAT purposes as it promoted physical and mental well-being.

The ECJ however decided that for an activity to be a sport it must have a significant physical element which the card game did not.

The impact is that entry fees to Bridge competitions will remain subject to VAT at the standard rate.

Should your organisations have any VAT queries in relation to their own plans or activities then do give the Centurion VAT team a call and we’d be happy to talk the issue through.
