VAT Treatment of top slicing on grants – Fake News or Issue of Concern?

10.05.2018

What started as an article in FE News about HMRC starting to challenge the sector on the VAT treatment being applied to monies top sliced from grant funded projects; which then was undermined as being apparently without substance; seems now to have been taken up by HMRC as a point of interest due to the concerns it raised.

There have even been webinars on the issue. What is clear is that there is a potential disparity in VAT treatment being applied. Now that difference may be justified, as VAT is very much determined on the facts of the transaction, but there is a sense of some concern from the sector over where this may lead.

It’s a topic area that will be covered at our VAT Forums in June for Universities and Colleges so do book in to the relevant sector Forum to attend and learn more. VAT Forum Events
